Are you planning to have dental implants placed to rebuild your smile? Before the day of the surgery, you should make sure that you have an accurate idea of what will happen afterward. As part of the recovery process, you’ll need to take some time off from work so that you can rest at home. But just how much time will that be? When can you expect to be able to return to your regular routine? Here’s what all patients should know prior to getting dental implants.

How Much Recovery Time is Needed After Dental Implant Surgery?

The exact amount of recovery time required after dental implant surgery can vary from patient to patient. Many individuals are able to return to work after just a day or two; others may need to plan on resting at home for up to a week.

There are several factors that can affect the amount of time you need to take off of work after dental implant surgery, including:

  • The Number of Implant Posts: The more implant posts that are placed in your jaw, the longer you can expect the recovery process to take.
  • Certain Medical Conditions: Some medical issues, such as a compromised immune system, can slow down the healing process.
  • The Care You Give Your Smile: Closely sticking to any post-op instructions you received is essential for ensuring that the recovery process doesn’t take longer than necessary.

How Can You Make Sure That the Recovery Process Goes as Planned?

To keep the recovery process on track after your dental implant surgery, you should follow these simple tips:

  • Take It Easy: Plan on avoiding heavy exercise for a while after your surgery. Strenuous physical activity could exacerbate post-surgical bleeding and swelling.
  • Rinse with Salt Water: After the first 24 hours of your recovery, you can start rinsing with salt water multiple times a day. This promotes faster healing and lowers your risk of developing an infection.
  • Plan Your Diet Carefully: While your mouth is healing from dental implant surgery, you should stick to a diet of soft foods or liquid foods that require little to no chewing. Good choices include scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and yogurt.

As long as you follow your post-op instructions and are diligent about taking care of your mouth after your dental implant surgery, it shouldn’t be too long before you’re able to return to your normal activities.
